Sunday School Children

'Carlingcott Methodist Sunday school meets every Sunday at 3 pm, and is run by Joan Hookins and Jonathan Rich. Attendance fluctuates, but up to 13 youngsters, aged between 7 and 15, meet each week. Two new girls started this year, which is a great encouragement to us. We have many schools represented - Wellow, Camerton, Writhlington, Monkton Combe, Peasedown - which is amazing considering the small number attending.

'Prior to Carol Service practicing, which started at the beginning of December, we had a series on the Fruit of the Spirit, and had stories about different Bible folk who displayed some of the individual qualities, as well as general talks about loving God and others (even our enemies!), being joyful, experiencing deep peace, etc. We discovered that if we allow God into our lives, we will be like a tree bearing this fruit. We had colouring, games, quizzes, memory verses - all sorts of things - to help us to remember each fruit, and we each made a special book too. After Christmas, we started a series on some of the Names of Jesus - Bread of Life, Light of the World, Good Shepherd, The Way, Truth and Life, My Son whom I love, Son of David, Word, Saviour, Rock and Redeemer - and learned why He was called, or called Himself, these names, as well as completing activity sheets relating to each one, games and other crafty things.

'A small number of the Sunday school children also attend the evening service at 6 pm, and are taken out to the vestry (before the sermon, usually), where they have Postal Bible School lessons. These are pre-set lessons in books of four (a month's worth), and each pupil has her own book for her academic level (Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior). A Bible portion is read, and questions answered, and the younger ones have colouring-in too. When a book is completed, the lessons are posted to the area office in Holcombe, then sent on to teachers in various parts of the country to be marked. They are returned via the same route, and the accumulated marks can be 'spent' on many different items, all of which are listed in a catalogue given at the outset, when joining the scheme. One young student has over 5,000 points, and at a maximum total of 80 on each book (20 per lesson), you can tell she's been doing these for some time. There are also incentives along the way - rubbers, bookmarks, pencils, pens, etc, usually when so many lessons have been completed, which encourage the children to press on. Jonathan and Joan are on hand to help out, as the questions are sometimes not straightforward, and we are on a time limit of around half-an-hour. These lessons can be downloaded from the Internet www.biblelinkit.com. Worth a look!'
