Building Scheme Report

10 Years ago we were asked to put our proposals forward for the future of our Church. The Methodist Church Resources office at Manchester were consulted with a view that necessary maintenance and improvements should be carried out.

The work included: Replacement of all windows, repairing the damaged and defective external stonework, removing the existing basement floor (formerly called the boiler room), dealing with the rising dampness, and constructing a new solid and waterproof floor, repairing or renewing the internal wall finishing’s , providing modern toilets including provision for the disabled, new kitchen, provide Internal and external ramps for the disabled, renew staircase from basement to first floor, provide new vestry, and update all electrics and heating.

It was agreed at start, Carlingcott Methodist Church should contribute £25,000 towards the total cost estimated at £80,000 - £90,000. .

An architect was commissioned to carry out this work on an agreed professional fee. They prepared a survey and proposed scheme and were paid an interim payment of £3338.00.

Other work carried out to date include the replacement of the 6 lancet windows to the main Church, protection of the stained glass window to front of church, new side door from the side of the road to the basement, treatment to timber of the building, new tables and chairs to schoolroom and a new boiler.

At last the work on the Schoolroom & cellar areas got under way at the end of May 2002. Work progressed through the summer months. The main contract was completed in September 2002 in time for our Harvest Thanksgiving services.

The schoolroom is now refurbished which includes a fully equipped Kitchen & disabled toilet. The ground floor, which was a dirty damp cellar used to house the old coal boiler, is now beautifully enhanced. We can now have a nice new vestry/meeting room, disabled toilet which replaces the one under the stairs, & a  new Oil Boiler & heating system has been installed giving full central heating to the main Church, Vestry, & Schoolroom areas.

So far the work carried out has cost around £95,000.00 made up from grants & money raised by the congregation of the church.

A further £15,000.00 is required to complete the work which includes a disabled ramp to the side of the church, a fire alarm system, & a sound system.

The church now has fine facilities for Weddings, meetings, & various functions etc, including a spacious hall with kitchen, & disabled toilets.

It will be very evident that the spirit of the miners families who built the chapel in 1851 is still strong in Carlingcott of 2009.
